Welcome

Welcome from the PAAO President

Dear Pan-American Friends:

The Pan American Ophthalmology Association (PAAO) has the great honor and pleasure of celebrating our XXXIV Pan American Ophthalmology Congress in the beautiful city of Cancun, Mexico on May 25-28, 2019. The PAAO is really excited to return to one of the most beautiful and paradisiacal cities in Latin America! Join us to update us on the latest techniques in ophthalmology in the different specialties that place the leading ophthalmologists in the region among the best in the world. The program offers a clinical and surgical approach to the daily problems we must deal with in our practice including guest symposiums by the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University and the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Prevention of Blindness and Low Vision, and a Subspecialty Day among many other activities. In addition, we will have symposiums, courses, electronic posters, free works, videos, and social events. It will be a memorable congress and the Cancun Convention Center will be the ideal setting for that educational opportunity and interpersonal connections that are so important today!

Cancun is a city of many attractions, offers a wealth of interesting and fun activities that include nature, traditions and culture. There are so many attractions that it is difficult to decide what to do first. You can start the day enjoying the shining sun on the beach building sand castles, diving and fishing tours, practicing all kinds of water sports, undertaking treks through the jungle, making guided tours of the archaeological sites, having fun in the theme parks of the area, as well as visiting the nearby islands.

Mexico also has many other tourist attractions and contains an immense amount of history, tradition and religion. It has become one of the most important tourist destinations in Latin America. Apart from its churches, museums, monuments and plazas, it is characterized by the landscapes of indigenous cultures such as the Mayans, the Aztecs, the Zapotecs, among others in beautiful places such as Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, Queretaro and many more for those who wish to extend their stay.

We are confident that this XXXIV Pan American Congress of Ophthalmology Cancun 2019 will be a great scientific and social success. Let’s enjoy the hospitality of our Mexican brothers!

Welcome everyone!

J. Fernando Arévalo, MD FACS
President of the PAAO

Welcome from the SMO President

Dear friends and colleagues:

Once again, the Mexican Society of Ophthalmology is pleased to host of the Pan-American Congress of Ophthalmology. This will be the sixth time Mexico has hosted the Pan-American Congress.

The experience started in 1952 when we organized the IV Congress in Mexico City, then in 1981 in Acapulco (XIII), 1997 in Cancun (XXI), again in Cancun 2007 (XXVII) and finally the joint event XXXIII Mexican Congress, XXXII Pan-American Congress and XXV World Congress of Ophthalmology 2016 in Guadalajara.

Cancun will host again the XXXIV Pan-American Congress, this time in conjunction with the V Biennial Course of the Mexican Society of Ophthalmology, our great update forum that includes the participation of the eleven subspecialty groups affiliated to our Society.

The shared planning of the Congress will offer a great academic program that is highly inclusive and interactive with the participation of 26 national societies of the Americas and Europe, 14 Latin American subspecialty groups and several ophthalmology hospitals or departments.

The speed with which knowledge and technology change is undeniable, and this obliges us to keep continually updated in the two main areas of our specialty, clinical and surgical.

Of course, we do not forget the social activity that we always enjoy, establishing and strengthening bonds of friendship among the different countries that make up the region.

On behalf of the Mexican Society of Ophthalmology, we cordially welcome you and your families. We know it will be an enjoyable experience for everyone

Kind regards,

Dr. Eduardo Chávez Mondragon
President, Mexican Society of Ophthalmology 2019
